A small oak opposite the egg has a rich crop of galls to harvest. I will use them to make a dye for my clothing and to create an ink for drawing as the first step toward understanding the cultural and environmental importance of the tree in this particular riverscape.

On Living Here
Five hours ago, video journalist John Galliver’s four minute film about my life in the Egg went live. It is called ‘The man who lives in an egg’ and has been made as part of a series called ‘Real Time’ for the BBC News website. Please do watch it on http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24574082
Egglet Returned
The Egglet released around a week ago beached on the marsh edge yesterday, just twenty feet from its original point of departure and I immediately relaunched its more weather worn self. The wind is having a stronger effect than the tide on this small but lightweight orb and I hope a Winter north-easterly might eventually carry it toward the Solent.
Haircut
The dignity of the Beadle’s outward aspect was maintained on Monday when Daniel came from Lymington to cut my hair. He is now hairdresser to the Egg and I hope he will be able to return in the Winter. Some of the saved grey clippings will provide samples needed to mix with a blackberry and Lye mixture which in the Seventeenth Century was identified as the essential element of a permanent black hair dye. I shall experiment…
Launch of Egglet No.1
‘Egglet No1’ was launched yesterday after some delay due to adverse weather (south westerly winds which would have quickly returned it to its point of departure). An easterly wind and a neap tide carried it to a marsh island around sixty metres distant, where it will stay until spring tides around full moon allow it to venture further. It carries the shell of a five year old common whelk as well as the egg cases of the same species, previously gathered from this location.

Everyday Events (Sunset)
The sun set toward Beaulieu in beguiling fashion yesterday evening as I recorded the event to test the GoPro camera’s capacity for time lapse photography from a bright to no light situation. I will need use a different camera to shoot the night sky. The sun goes down every day in greater or lesser glory, but what is really happening in the air it shines through and on land and water here in my parish below?
Everyday Actions (Shaving)
After a few days growth a hairy face literally becomes an irritation and action is needed. Yesterday morning I used the reverse camera on my phone as a shaving mirror to explore elements of this everyday ritual. The bristles were long, the blade less than sharp, the water cold and the sink tiny. More elegance might be possible on future mornings but yesterday this is how it was. To day I noted how the same cycle has begun to turn again…
